There are various types of pregnancy complications that can lurk pregnant women. One of them is mirror syndrome. Although rare, mirror syndrome is a dangerous condition that can be fatal if it is detected too late. For prospective parents, the birth of a baby is a long-awaited moment. No wonder the pregnant women are trying very hard to maintain the health of the baby and himself by eating healthy foods, taking prenatal vitamins, and also routinely do pregnancy checks. Symptoms of Mirror Syndrome

Medically, mirror syndrome is known as Ballantyne syndrome or triple edema. The reason for this syndrome is called "mirror" syndrome is because the symptoms in the fetus and the mother have in common, which is both experiencing swelling. The body of the fetus is swollen due to excess fluid, and at the same time, the body of the pregnant woman also swells due to preeclampsia. In general, the symptoms experienced by pregnant women with mirror syndrome are very similar to the symptoms of preeclampsia, which are:
  • High blood pressure.
  • Excessive weight gain in a short time.
  • The presence of protein in urine.
In this condition, also found an increase in blood plasma levels, while red blood cells decrease in number. This makes the blood thinner. This condition, known as hemodilution, can only be known if a pregnant woman has a blood test.

Causes and Treatment of Mirror Syndrome

The cause of mirror syndrome is still not known with certainty. However, this condition is usually associated with fetal hydrops, which is a condition where the fetus experiences excess body fluids, such as under the skin, stomach, and around the heart and lungs. When fetal hydrops cause preeclampsia, mirror syndrome occurs. Fetal hydrops itself can be caused by various things, such as genetic and heart problems, metabolic disorders, anemia, or infections. In addition, fetal hydrops can also be caused by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) which attacks pregnant women with twins. In this condition, identical twin fetuses must share blood flow from one placenta, so that blood flow between the two fetuses becomes unequal. One fetus becomes short of blood supply, while the other is excess. Treatment of mirror syndrome varies greatly, depending on the cause of fetal hydrops and the severity of preeclampsia in pregnant women. The sooner the triggering factor of fetal hydrops is known, the greater the chance of the fetus to survive. If preeclampsia experienced by pregnant women is very serious, then early labor may be done to save the lives of mothers. After birth, the baby will be treated in the NICU room to get further treatment.
